Crit Night Submissions for July

Crit NightHello and welcome to Critique Night. Critique night is dedicated to artist’s helping artist’s improve their work and reach their highest goals. This is round 4 of Crit night hosted here on Sammacha.com and I have 3 awesome submissions here. Let’s see what we can learn.

Pic #1.  Roxanne by Sammacha
Artist's Statement: Recently I have decided to once again work with digital "painting" while continuing to use my line work. I really feel that I have come a long way with digital art (and art in general) in the past year. I have been focusing more on anatomy and light sources. Of course any suggestions are helpful but my main focus at the moment are those two things.

Pic #2 Celeste by Antumbra
Artist Statement: Tried a new shading technique with ambient occlusion while mixing colors in the lights and shadows.  Not sure I like where it is at right now, but I definitely want to keep improving!
Any critique you are looking for in particular?  Definitely the shading and the coloring.

Pic #3:  Walk with me by FF-Boy
Artist Statement: "This is my best work I have done so far. This time, I wanted to practice background and painting technique.
For the critique, I would love to hear anything that you think they need to be improved, such as anatomy, composition, perspective, color scheme, painting techniques, etc. Thank you in advance! ^^"

critnight2

Hello and thank you for particularizing in crit night!

Crit night is a small event held here on www.sammacha.com’s art blog. Its a event where artist help artists by submitting both an image for critique and a critique for a randomly assigned artist. This allows for everyone to receive input from someone different. It also provide and opportunity for each artist to look at a style they may not be familiar with and offer some advice or opinions while learning themselves as well.

This time around we had a few less participants (5) due to the holiday’s but there is no lack of helpful tips from each of our artists.

If you are an artist or know and artist that may be interested please pass on the link with all the info
https://www.sammacha.com/art/category/crit-night/

Helping out a friend, so much stress!

Thing have been sort of stressful lately. I’ve been looking for a good job and not found one yet. I also need something for my moms birthday.

I have however been able to help out a really good friend. He needed some help finding a new place and moving. I’ve been helping him pack and move in my car which isn’t really fun, lol. I also sadly… damaged my car… A drawer opened and bashed mt rear window.  So there is now a small dent in my rear window. The ceiling liner of my car is also damaged, grrrr…. It totally sucks considering it wasn’t damaged at all before the move.  Now I have a dented ceiling liner and I just know my rear window defrost isn’t going to work when it starts getting colder 🙁

I’m so disappointed in myself for this. We were just really frustrated and rushing and boom car window broken. *sigh*

and now here’s where the stress peaks out >.>

So during the move my car got damaged, when we got the large truck and got to the new apartment… it was NOT ready. It had the carpet pulled out (new carpet supposed to be installed), the counters were removed (again supposed to be new), no blinds, fridge or stove. WTF?
So we have a rented truck full of stuff and we cannot unload it? Holy shit!

So we complain to the manager of the building duh, and she is like,  I’m busy, I don’t care. Again WTF?
Now, while I would say, Don’t go here because the manager sucks! its one of the few affordable places in the wanted location that takes cats. Also, its move in day, its not like he can just go home sit down and come back tomorrow.

so we had to basically harass them for the carpet to put the stuff in the room. I was there until 5:30, still having not eaten all day. so finally, @#$%! I am going to Denny’s ( Thank God, a restaurant with awesome food is still open!). It was so much nicer to be able to have a nice meal. Awesome Chicken burger and my friend just loved the bacon burban burger (it was pretty good, but I hate mushrooms).  I also order a spaghetti for the next day (thank god the microwave was in th front sea of my car because there is no stove or fridge here!

All day, all night, packing unpacking…

now, harassing them for stuff and for cleaning. Sadly the manager of the place really is a B@$%! BAsically, since the place has been rented, she doesn’t give a rats ass anymore. WOW, its all I can say. time to complain to the building owner and the tenants right’s Advisory (o how fun)

This has been super shitty, the whole month. Just, how does one building with over 150 suites have such a crap manager?

And geez, what a horrible exp. All I am doing is trying to help a very dear friend, and it just… seems like it blows up in my face. Not to mention his bad back is acting up again, no doubt from the stress of the move.

Luckily, the cat seems ok with the new place….

First Crit Night!

critnight2

Hello, and welcome to the first crit night on Sammacha.com.

As usual the first run is always full of a few bumps but I feel that it went alright. If anyone has any feedback on what can be improved I would be happy to hear it.

I must thank most everyone for submitting their artwork and their critique on time. (Yes since this is the first crit night I have made an exception to the rules)

I hope everyone will be able to benefit from tonight and many more to come, so, on to the artwork.

Everyone was assigned one image to critique and it was optional to critique any other piece you felt like. To read the critique you received just click on your picture. Feel free to leave comments or send me an e-mail and I will forward it to the owner of the picture or the critic.

I look forward to having another crit night in the near future, new participants welcome. Click here for more information on Crit Night

The Blue Pansy butterfly – Pencil Art

The Blue Pansy Butterfly

Just testing out my pencils and paper, it was a good learning exp, plus Butterflies are not easy to draw! Damn mirror image XD
Good to work with such a rich colour on paper again 🙂

So basically I wanted a somewhat simple butterfly that had some stunning colors. There are some very interesting ones out there but I chose this one for the vibrant blue, purple and orange. It creates a great contrast and will be perfect for testing out the blending of the color son the paper.

The blue pansy butterfly is a very pretty one 🙂

The Reference photo

To do a mirror image on paper, well its really quite a pain. I started by sketching out one side then scribbling reference lines all over it to try and get the correct proportions and angles on both sides.

The Draft

When I was happy with that I moved onto a new pencil line art fixing up the details of the pattern within the wings. I ended up doing just one side to get a feel for where the colors went and how the pattern should look. (you can see them in the gallery below) In the end it came out a bit different then the ref but I think I like it.

Here was the complete butterfly line work that I came up with.

Pattern correction

I was actually pretty happy with this piece, I got most of the shapes worked out.

I continued to do a quick graphite version, as I needed to test out the paper with both colors and graphite. ( I have never used this type of paper before). Actually it was not quick, it was pretty time consuming, what a pain to color a mirrored image even with the line work lol.

It went well but it was quite different then what I am used to. This paper holds the graphite very well and the blending doesn’t work the same for me.

The entire process can be seen below if you are interested. the entire… project, took a few days to complete over a course of I maybe 2 or 3 weeks as I didn’t work on it everyday. more of an on and off project in between, that thing called life.

enjoy

🙂

Who can join and What can I submit?

who

Almost anyone can join. I am open to people of all skill levels submitting their art work for constructive criticism.

*If you would like to receive critique on your work you MUST be willing to critique the work of another person ON TIME!

You Must Read The Rules

to participate, please contact me at SamanthaLim@sammacha.com by the deadline stated on the schedule

If you just want to drop a comment feel free!log in

submitThis is open to people who draw, sketch or paint digitally or traditionally. All styles are welcome.

This is not for people who do photo-manipulations, photography,  sewing, creative writing,  crafts or 3D art.

Pictures do not need to be complete. Sometimes it is very valuable to receive critique on a picture before it is finished. this helps you to improve the overall finished project. However it must be clean ( not a ton of  messy scribbles) so we can see what you are trying to create. Its no use asking someone to critique a picture if they aren’t sure what you are trying to accomplish. Submit something worth while.

Don’t forget you can request Critique on a certain part of your drawing in particular.

DONT FORGET

  1. Post your own artwork. The reason for Crit night is not to see who is the best artist on the page, its to get an insight to how you can improve. DO NOT post artwork that is not your own. DO NOT post tracings or copies of other peoples work. we are looking for YOUR original artwork.I will accept fan art but it must not be a simple copy of  another piece, that would be copyright infringement. Using a reference picture is ok.
  2. Quality Pictures. Please submit quality pictures. This means using a scanner or taking quality photos or your artwork. We want to be able to actually see your artwork!
  3. Water Marks. I myself use a water mark on my artwork and I understand its purpose completely.  When you apply a watermark to your artwork please do it in a way which does not obstruct or distort the image (make the watermark fairly transparent).
  4. Permissions. Keep in mind that this is a PUBLIC BLOG. the public will be able to view all the images which you are allowing me to post for crit night. Please don’t submit things which are personal or contain personal information. By adding them to crit night you are allowing me to post them on my website and or blog for the purposes of Crit night (promotion, examples etc.)
  5. Sexual images and Pornography. Again, this is open to people of all skill levels and various ages. I understand nudity and sexual images but please submit what you would deem “tasteful.” To put it short and simple no hard core porn please! if your not sure please ask.
  6. Violence. Yet Again, this is open to people of all skill levels and various ages. Please no horribly graphic violent images.
  7. Offensive Images. No Overly offensive images such as very racist, religious or political images. Light humor and stereotypes are allowed.
